The method involves detecting a current state of a vehicle (10) and current environmental condition using internal and/or external sensor system in the vehicle and/or external communication networks. A future environmental condition is predicted for a predetermined prediction horizon. Recuperation degree is determined based on the current state of the vehicle, the current environmental condition and the future environmental condition using a mathematical model i.e. time-discrete model. The determined recuperation degree is adjusted according to recuperation. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling an electrical machine of a vehicle.
