The folding unit (1) has support cylinders (30.1-30.5) and cutting cylinders (20.1-20.3), of which one pair of cutting cylinders are cooperated with folding devices and retaining units to form respective folds of train by transverse cutting of strand sections. The first and second pairs of cylinders are provided with respective folding devices and cutting units for cross-cutting a web strand to separate strand portions. The support cylinders (20.1,20.2) are located in a common strand running space (LS) with respect to cutting cylinders for processing web strand (BS).
