The device (1) has energy storage modules (10a, 10k) whose two output terminals (2a, 2b) are coupled to respective supply terminals (1a, 1b) of the device. Each module comprises an energy storage cell (5), which is coupled with one output terminal. A supply switch device (4a) is coupled between the cell and another output terminal. A bypass switch device (4b) is coupled between the supply switch device and the former output terminal and in parallel to the cell. The supply and bypass switch devices cooperate with parasitic inductor (5c) of the cell as synchronous transducers (3). The supply and bypass switch devices comprise FETs or insulating gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a drive system (2) a method for providing power supply voltage in an energy storage device.
