The device (1) has n parallelly connected power supply branches (10) coupled with output terminals (1a-1c), respectively. Each branch has a set of energy storage modules (3), which are connected in series and have an energy storage cell module with energy storage cells. A switch comprises two half bridge branches provided with free-wheeling diodes connected in series to active coupling elements. The coupling elements are formed such that the modules are selectively switched or bypassed in respective branches. An independent claim is also included for a system comprising an energy storage device.
