The method involves applying a piezo actuator (1), which in addition to active piezo area has a passive piezo area as a force sensor (2), where the active piezo area is applied for activating a closure element. The force acting on the passive piezo area is determined using the force sensor. The required pressure decrease of the system of the active piezo area is controlled such that a pressure decrease takes place by switching leakage of the actuation element, without reaching a force threshold corresponding to the opening of the closure element. An independent claim is included for a fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine.
