The method involves actuating a pump piston (17) of a pump element (5) of an injection pump unit (1) by an electromagnetic actuator (3). Injection pressure and quantity of fuel to be injected are determined based on a signal by the actuator. The actuator is controlled such that the desired injection pressure and fuel quantity are controlled by force over a period of the injection process, where the piston is actuated by the actuator with force. The force is controlled by current flowing through the actuator during the injection process. An independent claim is also included for a computer program having a set of instructions for executing a method for operating an injection pump unit of a fuel injection system of an internal-combustion engine.
