The method involves driving a movably arranged component i.e. valve needle, of a fuel injection valve (18a) by an electromagnetic actuator. A control operating mode for controlling the actuator is selected in dependence of fluid quantity i.e. fuel quantity, to be injected such that a one-to-one connection exists between the fuel quantity to be injected and control duration of the actuator. The control operating mode is defined by time dependency of control voltage and/or control current for control of the actuator and/or middle valve opening velocity. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising a set of instructions to perform a method for operating a valve (2) an electronic or optical storage medium comprising a set of instructions to perform a method for operating a valve (3) a control and/or regulating device for operating a valve.
