The method involves conducting intake air through a throttle bypass (204) around a throttle (62) and through a turbine (206) for driving an auxiliary generator (210), and charging a battery (212) via the auxiliary generator when a charging condition of the battery lies below a high threshold value. The valve is arranged in an intake channel of an engine (10). A mechanically driven primary generator (214) is used for charging the battery in addition to the auxiliary generator only when the charging condition of the battery is smaller than a low threshold value or when a vehicle runs slow. An independent claim is also included for a system controlling charging of a battery of a multi-cylinder engine.
