The method involves implementing a diagnostic phase of a battery (2) and/or a charger (3) of a charging system (1) before and/or during and/or after charging the battery. The charger is transferred to a maintenance zone of a battery exchange station for implementing maintenance operation of the battery, in case of detection of malfunction of the charger, during the battery diagnostic phase. Temperature of the battery is tested during the battery diagnostic phase. The battery is transferred to a storage zone for cooling the battery, when the temperature of the battery exceeds a threshold. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a data recording medium comprising instructions for performing a method for operating a charging system (2) a system for charging a battery to supply power to a drive motor of a motor vehicle.
