PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a surface treatment method of a negative electrode for a magnesium secondary battery, capable of decreasing the negative electrode impedance in the magnesium secondary battery and suppressing the overvoltage of the negative electrode to a practicable level; a negative electrode for a magnesium secondary battery; and a magnesium secondary battery.SOLUTION: A magnesium secondary battery (Ba) includes: a negative electrode (2a) capable of releasing magnesium ions during discharging and capable of precipitating magnesium metal during charging; a positive electrode (1a) capable of precipitating a magnesium oxide during discharging and capable of releasing magnesium ions during charging; and a nonaqueous conductor (3) for conducting magnesium ions as conduction species. In a surface treatment method of a negative electrode for the magnesium secondary battery (Ba), an initializing discharge step of performing discharging to form a new surface on the surface of the negative electrode, thereby initializing the negative electrode, and a charging step of performing charging to form a magnesium film (M) on the surface of the negative electrode are performed in order.
