The method involves detecting a variable that represents the motion of a wheel of a motor vehicle, and actuating a steering system of the motor vehicle as a safety device depending on the variable representing the movement of the vehicle wheel. The wheels of the vehicle are inclined to be adjusted by actuating the steering system, particularly relative to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. The orientation of the inclined position of the wheels is adjusted depending on a sensor-detected environmental evaluation. The sensor is selected from a camera, radar or an ultrasonic sensor. An independent claim is included for a regulating- or controlling device for a safety device to influence a motor vehicle during accidental rolling.
