The couch (1) has a height-adjustment device coupled to a couch surface (2) for adjusting a vertical position of the couch surface. The height-adjustment device comprises an operating element that is coupled with a fluid pumping system such that a portion of a lifting operation is applied for lifting the couch surface during operation of the operating element. The operating element comprises a mechanical lever that is designed as a pedal (7). The height-adjustment device comprises a release mechanism that is operated for moving the couch surface into a down position. An independent claim is also included for a method for adjusting a vertical position of a couch surface of a patient couch.
