The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for expressing language characteristics of a user in an MPEG-user description (UD) system. The method includes the steps of: receiving a UD request with respect to the language characteristics of a user from a recommendation engine; calling the UD with respect to the language characteristics of the user from a UD database; and transmitting the called UD with respect to the language characteristics of the user to the recommendation engine.
