Method of optimising the spectral efficiency of a transmission of data, characterized in that it consists, from a set of pairs of modulation and first correcting code data, to: - determine, for each of said pairs, the maximum yield of a second correcting code to be applied to the data to be transmitted before application of the first correction code and of the modulation in order that the error rate (pet) on the data received after transmission on a channel which is not perfect, at most equal to an error rate target (pet), - select, among the set of solutions of modulation, the first and second correction codes, which makes it possible to maximize the spectral efficiency or to minimize the necessary transmission rate.
