The method and the apparatus make it possible to mechanically characterize in shear a grid, for example of Johnson type, composed of at least two wires welded to at least two parallel bars, the wires being arranged perpendicularly to the bars. The apparatus comprises two brackets 42 and 43 interconnected by two arms 44 and 45 by means of four pivot links 46 to form a deformable parallelogram. With the fastening means 47 is maintained a first bar located at one end of the grid and is maintained with the fastening means 48 a second bar located at another end of the grid. A force F is applied to the brackets 42 and 43 to impose a displacement of the first bar relative to the second bar, while maintaining the first bar parallel to the second bar.
