PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positive electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, which enables the suppression of gelation of a paste composition for a positive electrode mixture layer and the achievement of a high cycle characteristic.SOLUTION: The above problem is solved by a positive electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery and others. The positive electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery comprises: particles of a lithium nickel complex oxide having a particular composition; and a coating layer covering at least a part of the surface of each particle. The coating layer is formed by fine particles made of an oxide including at least one kind of element selected from a group consisting of Zr, Al, Ti, Nb, Sn, Si, B and P. In the positive electrode active material, the content of carbon is 0.01-0.5 mass% to a total of 100 mass% of the positive electrode active material, and the content of water is 0.01-0.2 mass%.SELECTED DRAWING: None
