A dose counter is provided for a metered dose inhaler the metered dose inhaler comprising a canister having a metering valve with a valve stem and an actuator. The dose counter comprises a housing having a first portion and an opposing second portion the ho using first portion configured to receive a metered dose inhaler canister and the housing second portion including an actuation det ection assembly comprising a first actuation detection element and a second actuation detection element; and an electrical assembly wherein the actuation detection elements are configured to adopt a rest position in which the respective actuation detection elements are spaced apart by a gap and an actuation detection position in which the respective actuation detection elements are in contact and generate an actuation detection output and wherein said electrical assembly receives said actuation detection output for indexing of the dose counter. A metered dose inhaler including the dose counter is also provided.
