The invention relates to a process for preparing a composite friction material with iron base intended for car friction pads or other industrial friction applications. According to the invention, the process starts by screening the iron, copper and titanium dioxide powders having a particle size of less than 10 μ m, after which the powder mixture dosed according to the formula is homogenized by mechanical grinding, for 15 min, in a planetary ball mill having a plate rotary speed of 1000 rpm and the containers rotary speed of 500 rpm, the homogenized mixture being then compressed biaxially in a closed mould, using a compacting pressure of 600 MPa, in the final stage the raw pressed pieces being sintered under vacuum, at a pressure of 10torr, at a sintering temperature of 1050°C, the sintering temperature being maintained for 30 min.
