A pipe joint for plastic pipe includes a bell member (10) and a spigot member(50). The bell member includes atubular plastic body wall having a radially outer side including a pair ofspaced apart circumferentially extending ribs (208,210)and a metal reinforcement ring (212) located between the ribs. The tubularplastic body wall includes a circumferential plastic ringportion (214) extending between the ribs and radially exterior of the metalreinforcement ring to encase the metal reinforcementring within the tubular plastic body wall. A radial gap may be providedbetween the plastic ring portion and the metalreinforce-ment ring to accommodate differing thermal shrinkage rates asbetween the two different materials. The spigot member, which isinsertable into the bell member, includes a tubular plastic body wall havingan internal surface and an external surface (58) and alongitudinal axis and metal reinforcement (74) encased within the tubularplastic body wall. A plurality of plastic ribs (64,66,68)extend from the external surface of the tubular plastic body wall and form agasket channel.
