The invention relates to a method for model-based prediction of a system variable of a motor vehicle, in particular of a hybrid vehicle, in which a value or course of the system variable is predicted on the basis of a system model for a preceding section as a function of at least one model parameter (S1, S21). In accordance with general aspects of the invention, an actual value or history of the previously predicted system size is measured (S2, S22). Depending on a deviation of the predicted value from the measured value of the system variable, at least one model parameter influencing the prediction of the system variable is adapted (S4; S24) and used for a subsequent prediction of the system variable, wherein the at least one model parameter is adapted such that the adjusted model parameter would have led to a smaller deviation of the predicted value from the measured value of the system size.
