A tool adapting device (200) for adapting a manual surgical instrument (201) for robotic surgery comprises an attachment interface (231) configured for connecting the tool adapting device (200) to a distal end of a robotic surgery arm; and a tool activating mechanism (232) configured for holding a manual surgical instrument (201) and activating degrees of freedom of the manual surgical instrument (201). The tool activating mechanism (232) is controllable via the robotic surgery arm.
