A spark ignition engine comprising: an engine body having at least one cylinder (18) forming a combustion chamber (19) in an upper part thereof and serving to supply fuel mainly containing gasoline; a fuel injection valve (67) for injecting fuel into the combustion chamber (19); a spark plug (25) arranged to be oriented to an interior of the combustion chamber (19) and for igniting a mixed gas within the combustion chamber (19); an EGR introduction system for introducing exhaust gas into the cylinder (18); and a controller (10) for operating the engine by controlling at least one of the fuel injection valve (67), the spark plug (25), and the EGR introduction system, wherein the controller (10) controls; controls to combust the mixed gas within the combustion chamber (19) by compressing it for auto-ignition within a compression self-ignition combustion region lower in engine load than a predetermined first engine load and mixing the mixed gas within the combustion chamber (19 ) by a spark ignition by using the spark plug (25) within a spark ignition combustion region higher in the engine load than the first engine load, throughout the spark ignition combustion applying range except for a full throttle region - or Steuerein direction (10) controls the EGR introduction system to introduce into the cylinder (18) at least a low temperature cooled EGR gas, which is an exhaust gas cooled by heat exchange, and within the range applying the compression self-ignition control means (10) controls the EGR introduction system to introduce into the cylinder (18) at least hot EGR gas having a higher temperature than the cooled EGR gas, ...
