To provide methods for preserving nucleic acids of cells, bacteria or viruses contained in biological samples stably for a long term, where the analyte using the methods can supply to the concentration and culture steps of the cells, bacteria or viruses.SOLUTION: To solve the problem, the invention provides a method for preserving a nucleic acid contained in a cell, bacterium or virus within a biological sample, the method comprising a step of mixing the biological sample and a reducing agent, where the reducing agent is one or more selected from the group consisting of dithiothreitol, dithioerythritol, mercaptoethanol, tris (2-carboxyethyl)phosphine hydrochloride (TCEP-HCl), N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NALC), and L-cysteine hydrochloride.SELECTED DRAWING: None
