A stylus having an elongate body for use with a touch sensitive device is disclosed that generates a touch detection signal adjacent to the surface. In one embodiment, the stylus includes a nib having one or more nib components suitable for interacting with touch detection signals present on the touch surface, and the one or more variable circuits include the stylus. One or more nib components are operably connected to the body or other source of ambient ground. In one embodiment, the stylus has a nib including a plurality of nib components suitable for interacting with touch detection signals present on the touch surface; each of the plurality of nib components is Except for a variable circuit that variably connects at least two of the plurality of nib components, they are insulated from each other. Also disclosed is a method for detecting the position, angle, and rotation of a stylus with respect to a touch-sensitive device based on the detected amount of electrical connection.
