The present invention relates to a method for preparing a polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether carbonyl compound and/or methyl methoxyacetate serving as intermediates for producing ethylene glycol, comprising passing a raw material polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether or dimethoxymethane together with carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas through a reactor carrying an acidic zeolite catalyst, and preparing corresponding products by reacting in appropriate reaction conditions without adding any other solvent, where the reaction process is a gas-liquid-solid three-phase reaction. In the method of the present invention, the conversion rate of the raw material polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether or dimethoxymethane is high, the selectivity of each product is high, catalyst service life is extended, the need for additional solvents is obviated, and the reaction conditions are relatively mild. The method on the present invention allows for continuous production, and provides the potential for industrial application. Also, the products acquired can either be hydrogenated then hydrolyzed or be hydrolyzed then hydrogenated to produce ethylene glycol.
