A lithium-sulfur secondary battery comprising a negative electrode (anode) that includes lithium metal or lithium metal alloy, a positive electrode (cathode) that includes a sulfur-comprising cathode active material that is reduced to form polysulfides as an intermediate product , and an intermediate separator element containing a liquid or gel electrolyte solution through which the lithium ions from the negative electrode move to the positive electrode during the charge and discharge cycles of the lithium sulfur battery, where the electrolyte solution includes a non-aqueous aprotic solvent and a lithium salt, where the concentration of the lithium salt in the solvent is at least 90% saturation at a concentration that is equal to the saturation concentration of said lithium salt in said solvent .
