The present invention relates to an illuminating system for producing an illumination pattern for measuring the cornea of an eye and in particular for determining the topography of said cornea. The solution should enable distance-independent measurements. The illuminating system according to the invention for determining the topography of the cornea of an eye consists of an illuminating unit and a unit for producing an illumination pattern, wherein the illuminating unit consists of a plurality of illuminating modules. A lens array is used as a unit for producing an illumination pattern. Said lens array produces a spatially distributed, collimated illumination pattern. The illuminating system is used to produce an illumination pattern by means of which the topography of the cornea of an eye can be determined. The illuminating system is designed as a compact module so that the illuminating system can be easily combined with other measuring systems without coinciding with the beam paths of the other measuring systems.
