An adapter is provided for recharging the aerosol dispensing device. The adapter includes a body having a container side end portion and an opposing, device side end portion, each of which can be sealingly connected to an aerosol delivery device having a container of the aerosol precursor composition and a rechargeable reservoir. The body has a passage between the ends to transport the aerosol precursor composition from the vessel into the refillable reservoir. In one adapter, the container side end is configured to engage the valve of the container during recharging of the reservoir, and thus has separate discrete fill ports and occlusion ports. In another adapter, the device side end has a valve configured to engage the aerosol delivery device during recharging of the reservoir wherein the air flow port of the aerosol delivery device is closed by a valve to prevent the aerosol precursor composition from passing through the air flow port do.
