Mistake-proofing system (10) for installation of a timing gear of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle, comprising: – a crankshaft (11) that is able to rotate about an axis (X) of operation, – a timing gear (12) mounted at one end of the crankshaft (11) and coaxially with the crankshaft, – a longitudinal key (15) permitting angular locking of the gear (12) on the crankshaft (11), which key is secured parallel to the axis (X) of the gear and is designed to be received in a longitudinal slot (16) created in the crankshaft, said key (16) being associated with a pair consisting of a crankshaft (11) and a timing gear (12), where said key (16) is of fixed width and comprises a radial height (28) and a longitudinal length (27) that vary according to a pair consisting of the timing gear (12) and the crankshaft (11) for an engine rating, said height (28) varying inversely with respect to the variation in the length (27) of the key.
