To provide a surge tester capable of more reliably applying a prescribed surge electric power to a test object element by reducing affection due to variations in avalanche voltage of the test object element.SOLUTION: The surge tester comprises: a voltage measurement part for detecting avalanche voltage of a test object element; a programmable power supply generating and outputting an applied voltage for applying surge voltage to a test object element connected between a first testing terminal and a second testing terminal so as to be reverse bias; a current detection part detecting surge current flowing through the test object element applied the surge voltage; a comparator outputting current comparison result signal based on comparison result obtained by comparing the detected surge current value to a predetermined standard value; and a control part setting the applied voltage outputted by the programmable power supply based on the detected avalanche voltage, and based on the current comparison result signal outputted by the comparator, determining whether electric power equal to or greater than a prescribed electric power is applied to the test object element.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
