To provide a surface coated magnesium alloy base material excellent in corrosion resistance.SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing a surface coated magnesium alloy base material comprises: the step of arranging an aluminum containing magnesium alloy base material and a treatment solution in a closed space; the vapor coating step of contacting the vapor of a treatment solution to the surface of the aluminum containing magnesium alloy base material by heating the closed space to form a magnesium hydroxide coating including a magnesium hydroxide and a Mg-Al based layered double hydroxide on the surface; and the coating film formation step of forming a silica coating on the surface of the magnesium hydroxide coating by applying and heating a silicon alkoxide containing coating composition.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
