In the described example, a motor control system (800) for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) generates a first signal indicative of the strength of a first magnetic field component generated by a set of rotor (820) magnets. Two linear Hall devices (for generating and for simultaneously generating a second signal generated by the rotor (820) magnet and indicating the strength of the second magnetic field component substantially orthogonal to the first magnetic field component) 801, 802). An angular position and angular velocity of the rotor (820) is calculated based on the first signal and the second signal (807). A plurality of phase signals (809a to 809c) are generated based on the calculated angular position and angular velocity. Currents in a plurality of field windings of the motor are controlled using a plurality of phase signals (809a to 809c).
