An extendable, telescoping multi-purpose baton that holds one or more tools in such a way that a user can use the baton and another tool at the same time while at least one hand remains free. The baton is extendable by a propulsion mechanism permitting controlled speed and force of extension and may include a mechanism for retracting the telescoping segments when the force applied to a target reaches or exceeds a predetermined level. The telescoping mechanism may be electrically or pneumatically operated and can be extended with sufficient speed and force to deliver a blow or jab when impacting the target, at a distant distance significantly longer than the user's arm length, permitting use from a safe distance. The baton may be fitted with one or more tools or weapon elements such as a shocker, a gas canister, a blade, an illumination device or other implement at the same time.
