The invention relates to a method for dosing liquid by means of a pipette with an adjustable dosing increment and a syringe. The method includes the steps: connecting the syringe with the pipette; adjusting the dosing increment or retaining the set dosing increment; displaying the set dosing volume; sucking the liquid into the syringe by means of a drawing lever; detecting the position of a driveelement of a drive mechanism; determining and displaying the possible maximum number of dosing steps with the set dosing increment without refilling the syringe after executing the reverse stroke starting from the position of the drive element reached at the end of filling; executing the reverse stroke after the syringe is filled with the liquid; executing the dosing steps, counting the executed dosing steps, and determining and displaying the number of executed dosing steps and/or the number of still possible dosing steps without refilling the syringe; and executing the maximum possible number of dosing steps, releasing the syringe or using the same syringe to repeat the second to the eighth steps, and in the eighth step counting the total number of dosing steps performed with the set dosing increment, and/or determining the number of still possible dosing steps without refilling the syringe, and displaying the number of still possible dosing steps without refilling the syringe.
