A method comprising: a water pump (140) is switched between on and off, wherein the water pump (140) circulates a coolant through a motor (102) when the water pump (140) is turned on; controlling a first actuator of the engine (102) based on a first torque request and controlling a second actuator of the engine (102) based on a second torque request; a torque reserve before the water pump (140) is turned on or off based on a change in engine load expected when the water pump (140) is turned on or off, the torque reserve being a difference between the first torque request and the second torque request is; the torque reserve is reduced after the water pump (140) is turned on; the torque reserve is further reduced before the water pump (140) is turned off, and the second actuator is adjusted to prevent an increase in an engine speed (516) when the water pump (140) is turned off.
