The embodiments of the present invention provide a method for avoiding mistaken contact by means of top-emitting proximity light, and a terminal. The terminal comprises a touch screen, a proximity sensor and a motion sensor, the proximity sensor being located at a side of the terminal, and optionally at the top side of the terminal. Light emitted by the proximity sensor and the touch screen form a first included angle. The terminal acquires data detected by the motion sensor, and acquires motion data concerning the terminal according to the data detected by the motion sensor. The terminal determines whether the motion data is less than a first threshold. If the motion data is less than the first threshold, the terminal determines that no external object is currently approaching, and does not perform an action for avoiding mistaken contact. If the motion data is equal to or greater than the first threshold, the terminal determines, according to the data detected by the proximity sensor, whether an external object is approaching, and determines, according to the determination result, whether to subsequently execute an action for avoiding mistaken contact.
