The invention relates to a method for cross-cutting a material web (1), wherein the material web (1) is moved through between two rotation axes, about which interacting blades (3, 4) are moved in a rotating motion, which separate the material web (1) as it moves through, wherein at least one wiper unit (7) is either in a working position (15) or a park position (16). In order to achieve a high quality cut edge and high system availability, during operation at a circumferential speed of the blades (3, 4), which is lower than the speed of the material web (1), the wiping unit (7) and the blade (3, 4) moved about the same rotation axis, following separation of the material web (1), are moved relative to each other in order to release a part of the material web (1), which is moved along with a blade (3, 4), from the blade (3, 4), wherein the wiping unit (7) carries out the relative movements in the working position (15). The invention furthermore relates to a device for carrying out the method according to the invention.
