The present invention relates to: a pharmaceutical composition and a food composition for preventing or treating cancer, wherein compositions contain a Malva verticillata extract, a fraction thereof, a compound represented by chemical formula 1 isolated from the same, or pharmaceutically acceptable salt of the compound; and a method for manufacturing the compound. The Malva verticillata extract, the fraction thereof, and the compound represented by chemical formula 1 isolated from the same exhibit cytotoxicity on cancer cells and induce cell death, thereby being able to be utilized as the pharmaceutical composition, the food composition and the like for preventing, alleviating, or treating cancer.
