Systems and Methods for Rapid Nucleic Acid Extraction, Purification and Analysis

Methods and kits for rapid nucleic acid extraction from nucleic acid containing materials such as bone, tooth or semen samples are disclosed. For bone and teeth, the method comprises providing a nucleic acid containing material in a form suitable for nucleic acid extraction, adding lysis buffer to the nucleic acid containing material to obtain a mixture, and mixing the mixture in an equivalent manner for at least about 30 seconds. And separating the mixture by centrifugation to obtain a liquid supernatant. The liquid supernatant contains extracted nucleic acids that can be used for analysis involving STR profiling by conventional or rapid DNA analysis. For semen, the methods and kits include applying an appropriate amount of sperm breaker.
