The present invention relates to an improved vehicle number recognition system and to a method thereof. The improved vehicle number recognition system comprises: a camera for photographing an image of a baseline and a vehicle; a three-dimensional correction processing unit obtaining the baseline from a photographing image of the camera and using the baseline to correct the three-dimensional geometric distortion of the photographing image so as to generate and output a three-dimensional correction image; a license plate image processing unit detecting a contour of a vehicle license plate from the three-dimensional correction image output from the three-dimensional correction processing unit to obtain a vehicle license plate image; and a vehicle number recognition unit recognizing a vehicle license number from the vehicle license plate image obtained from the license plate image processing unit.
