The variable valve train (22) has a sliding cam system (26). The sliding cam system (26) has an axially displaceable cam carrier (34), which has only two cams for the first gas exchange valve, namely a first cam (40) and a second cam (42), and for the second gas exchange valve only two cams, namely, a third cam (44) and a fourth axially offset cams (46), on. The first cam (40), the second cam (42), the third cam (44) and the fourth cam (46) differ from a zero lift cam. The first cam (40) and the third cam (44) are identical. The second cam (42) and the fourth cam (46) are formed differently.
