摘要

The Indian tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon is theudprincipal species being cultured. Of late hatchery sectorudis being dependent on wild gravid females due to nonudresponse of broodstock to eyestalk ablation. High cost ofudgravid females compelling the grow-out sector to stockudpathogen carrier seeds. Hence domestication of tigerudshrimp is essential to produce Specific Pathogen Freeud(SPF) broodstock / Disease Resistant (DR) broodstock.udMerits and demerits of SPF versus DR broodstock areudpresented. Development of SPF broodstock involvesudstringent management of environment to arrest the entryudof pathogens and more than one economic trait can beudselected. Whereas in development of DR broodstockanimals are challenged with the pathogen and a selectionudof other economic traits are less possible. Resistance inudshrimp exists at the species level as well as individualudlevel. Experiment on domestication of P. monodon inudwhich programme was advanced up to F3 generation hasudrevealed the existence of resistance for WSSV at theudindividual level. Selective breeding programme foruddevelopment of D R broodstock involves developmentudof disease free base population, forming them intoudfamilies, production of F1ud generation family wise throughudinbreeding, challenging each family with WSSV at 3-5 gudsize and rearing survived individuals up to 100 g size,udproduction of F2ud generation by random inter crossingudbetween families, advancing the programme up to F5udgeneration.
