The 1986 general election and Le Pen's party in Languedoc-Roussillon. In 1986 (general election) as in 1984 (European election) the Rassemblement national (Le Pen's party) is, in Languedoc-Roussillon as in the whole France, mainly a demonstration of discontent from urban people. A part of them are the last to come, not yet firmy rooted; the other ones, of ancient stock, regard themselves as expelled from modernization, upset at the same time by increasing unemployment and insecurity, calamities imputed to immigrants. Their presence, at the "departement" scale, explains the votes for Le Pen's supporters; at the parish scale, yet, the mobility of this uprooted population appears to be a best explanation of the electoral behaviour than the presence of foreigners or unemployed people. The extreme right has made a spectacular breakthrough, using the need to be secure and xenophobic feelings among the electorate; it has become a first-rank political force.
