Hyatt Hotels Corporation is currentlyimplementing an enterprise-wide Energy Informationand Utility Monitoring System (UMS). New HorizonTechnologies and eComponents Technology haveteamed to provide an integrated solution that willultimately include all Hyatt Hotels in North America.In addition, these 120 Hyatt Hotels participate in amonthly web-based energy benchmarking and hotelengineering reporting system. For hotels with UtilityMonitoring Systems (UMS) installed, energy andwater consumption data is automatically summarizedfor the web reports. Hotels without the UMS entermonthly utility data manually on the website.The base UMS at the hotels consists of electric,gas and domestic water consumption and localtemperature and relative humidity measurements.The Hyatt UMS is one of the first enterprise-widesystems to include domestic water metering. Manyhotels elect to install additional sub-metering formajor loads or end uses such as chillers, kitchens andlaundries.The local hotel UMS consists of a dataacquisition system capable of displaying real-timedata that also logs 15-minute interval data. Thesystem transfers interval data daily, to a data centerand also transfers interval data hourly, via a LocalArea Network, to an on-site workstation with a localdatabase. The local workstation permits users tohave real-time alarming capability, access to easy-tousedata visualization and analysis tools, and theability to generate both customized and standarddaily and monthly reports. Report writing and utilitycosting software are used to generate daily andmonth-to-date cost reports. Bill estimation softwareuses actual utility rate tariff models to createestimates of utility costs for any custom definedperiod.Data resident in the Hyatt data center isaccessible to the individual hotels using a web-basedsystem. Senior engineers with authorization canaccess data for all Hyatt Hotels in their regions. Thecorporate energy director and senior managementhave access to all data in the Hyatt data center.Browser-based hotel benchmarking data is alsoavailable through a similar system with anauthorization hierarchy.This paper will describe the design andimplementation of the Hyatt UMS in detail, reviewhow the system is currently being used by Hyattpersonnel, discuss potential future applications andprovide an initial look at UMS system-wide data,including a preliminary return on investment (ROI)analysis.
