Construct Validity of the Individual Achievement Record: Phase I. Development of a Confirmatory Factor Model

The objective of this research was to examine the construct validity of the Individual Achievement Record (IAR). The IAR, which is an empirically-keyed biographical data inventory, was introduced in the spring of 1990 as one component of the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) Administrative Careers With America examinations. At present, the IAR is used with a cognitive abilities test for selection into nearly 100 Federal professional occupations, covering six major job families. The research was conducted in two phases. Phase I, which is presented in this paper, describes the development of a confirmatory factor model. The purpose of this phase was to establish an appropriate factor structure for the IAR.
