This project addresses a new jet cutting technique termed abrasive suspensionjet. An abrasive suspension is formed by mixing abrasives and water in addition to suspension stabilizing additives. The abrasive suspension is then pumped through a nozzle to form a cutting jet. The objective of this project was to investigate the potential of machining with high-pressure abrasive suspension jets and to develop a pump prototype for component evaluation and development. Significant accomplishments have been made in this program where, for the first time, 50-ksi abrasive suspension jets were used to cut materials. However, for this new cutting beam to be industrialized, further efforts are needed on pump development.
