As called for in section 313 of Public Law 99-660 and at the request of theNational Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, a committee of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences reviewed the possible adverse events following vaccination with a number of commonly-administered vaccines or vaccine components. The report (published in 1994) summarizes the relevant medical and scientific literature on the risks associated with currently U.S.-licensed vaccines against diphtheria, tetanus, measles, mumps, polio, hepatitis B, and haemophilus influenzae b. As part of its work, the committee held two public meetings to solicit medical and scientific data and comments on the nature and frequency of adverse reactions to the above vaccines.
