Some Background Information on Perceptual Color Matching Pertinent to Computer Applications

In closed color reproduction systems, color can be controlled with densitometric methods. With the advent of distributed document management systems-which entail device independence-these methods fail and the use of colorimetry is necessary. However, even with colorimetry a number of problems remain hard to solve, especially across media. It is often believed that such problems can be solved using more general models, like those developed in the study of color appearance. The report is an attempt to provide some background information about the modeling of color appearance. To guide the exposition, the author asks the question: 'Why are computer users willing to spend hundreds of dollars more for their equipment to add color.' After defining color appearance, he presents some published models from the literature. Finally, he relates it to colorimetry and reviews the possible benefits for desktop document preparation.
