The Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS) initiative is a major multinationalcooperative R&D program focused on improving the global competitiveness of manufacturing. In the early 1990s, over twenty IMS projects were initiated by Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI); this translated document is a summarized version of the project research report. This report focuses on the final automobile assembly line in carrying out conceptual designing. Three research topics are included in the report: maintenance of knowledge concerning automobile assembly work, conceptual design of intelligence module for assembly, and investigative research on the European automobile assembly system.
