The North Sea Landfill, which is on the National Priorities List (NPL), islocated in the Town of Southampton, Suffolk County, New York. On-site and off-site groundwater is contaminated with inorganic chemical compounds, organic chemical compounds and metals. Elevated levels of metals and inorganic compounds have been detected in private drinking water supplies downgradient from the landfill. Contaminants migrating from the landfill in groundwater discharge into the southeast region of Fish Cove. The concentrations of beryllium, iron and manganese detected in Fish Cove surface water exceeded New York State and/or federal standards. On-site workers and trespassers could potentially be exposed to contaminants in surface soil. Based on the information reviewed, the North Sea Landfill represented a public health hazard because of past exposure. This site currently poses no apparent public health hazard as there are no known exposures occurring to levels of contaminants that are likely to cause health effects.
